Streator, Illinois is a town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 5,354 at the 2010 census. Streator is one of the five towns in McLean County that were formed from the merger of two other towns on October 1, 1871. The merged communities had a combined population of 9,811 people. The first settler in what is now Streator was James A. Currie who arrived there in 1839. Currie built a log cabin on his farm which he named "Currie's Cabin." In 1842, John Ransom purchased land in what is now Streator and built a house which he called "Ransom's House." In 1849, Caleb Brown bought land also in present-day Streator and began to build a home which he called "Brown's House." In 1855, John Hildebrandt purchased property east of present-day Green Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets and began to build an addition to his home which he called the "Hildebrandt House." It was not until 1870 when Abraham Ladd acquired land west of 4th Street between Spring and Fifth Streets and started building his house which he called the "Ladd House". In 1865, David Cook moved from Quincy to live near Green Street in present day Streator. Cook became interested in taking over some of Hildebrandt's land so he decided to move into Hildebrandt's house on Green Street where he continued living until his death on May 10th, 1886. On October 1st of that year (1871), all five original towns within McLean County were merged together under one name - Streator Township. At that time the total population for these Towns amounted to just over 10,000 residents - making it one of the most populous townships within Illinois at that time! On October 15th 1902 (the date that incorporation papers were filed with the State Register), George Wampler donated money for a new school building at corner 3rd & Elm Streets - becoming the first person to do so! This school would be known as “Wampler School” until it closed its doors for good on December 12th 1970 (due to financial problems). Over time many more schools have been established within this township such as: White Settlement Elementary School (1935), Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic School (1963), Holy Name RomanCatholic School (1968) and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School (1984). Today only Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School remains open within this township! Today much activity takes place within the borders of this community including: farming; manufacturing; commerce; transportation; service industry; education; health care; etc., providing ample opportunity for both local residents and visitors alike!
Streator was a small town in Illinois that was the site of a major battle during the American Civil War. The town was located on the Mississippi River and it participated in the Battle of Streator which took place on July 12, 1864. The battle ended with Confederate forces being victorious and Union forces retreating.
