Streator, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Streator was founded in 1851 as a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The present-day town was laid out by James Sibley and named for him after his grandmother, Strea (Swanton). The first settler in what is now Streator was George Stephenson who built a cabin in 1847 on the site of present day Stone Road. In 1852 the village of Stoneburgh was organized and named for Stephenson's cabin. A post office called Stoneburgh was established in 1853 and remained in operation until 1888. In 1854, John Pritzker moved to Streator from Hinsdale with his wife Sarah Jane Pritzker and their four children under two years old. He became one of the first farmers in what is now Kane County. John Pritzker began to grow corn, beans, squash and sweet potatoes on his farm which henamed "Pritzker's Corn". He also raised chickens and rabbits which he sold to local merchants for eggs or meat. In 1865 Jens Munk arrived from Denmark with his family to help start a business that would become Munk's Dairy Products Company later known as Mondelez International Incorporated Munk helped found the village of Crystal Lake with other Danish immigrants led by Rasmus Nielsen who settled around Crystal Lake Dam on May 25th 1871 . After many years of hard work they finally received their citizenship status within the United States on June 14th 1880 . They started building their own home on land donated by Mr. Holland just east of where they still live today next to Highway 60 East/West

Streator, Illinois is a small town located in the far west side of the state of Illinois. The population was 6,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur-Highland Community Unit School District. Streator has been populated by Native Americans for over two thousand years and was first known as Hochelaga on account of its large hickory tree that stood in central square. In 1814, French traders named it La Salle after Jacques Lafitte who had sailed upriver from Canada and visited La Salle in 1769. By 1840, when the United States acquired this territory from France, La Salle had become a village and Streator was chosen as its seat because it offered good harborage for American vessels visiting the Great Lakes region. The original settlers were white men but soon began to arrive from Michigan and other parts of the Midwest lured by land grants available in these newly acquired territories. A school was established in 1836 and by 1840 there were twenty-four residents living in what would later become Streator. The first post office opened in 1843 and within five years all but one resident had moved to their new homes or died during frontier warfare with Mexico or other Indians who frequently raided Ulysses S Grant’s fur posts along the river valley near present day Decatur County Landing on the opposite bank of Lake Michigan (the site now occupied by Peoria). In 1870 local citizens raised $152 toward building a public house which became known as “The Gadsden Inn”; it still stands today across Main Street from where it once stood. Development continued apace with many stores being built along Main Street between 1860 and 1890 including: J & W Coffee shop (1860), Langer Drug store (1890), Ford Machine shop (1890), Pemberton lumberyard (1894), Griggs Woolen millinery store (1912) and finally First National Bank Building which housed banks until 1971 when it burned down next door to First National Japanese American Store owned by Nobuo Matsushita Jr., founder of Panasonic Corporation who also founded Japan's first major electronic company! During World War I, some residents served in military units such as Company C Fourth battalion Illini Infantry Regiment which fought on both sides at Ypres salient before returning home sick or casualties; many others worked odd jobs or took positions away from family to support troops overseas while others took advantage of Wilsonian reform policies offering free food, housing, education and other benefits to patriotic Americans -many ending up becoming farmers themselves! Following World War II nearly everyone returned home except for a few veterans who remained behind to help rebuild postwar America -a task completed successfully albeit slowly due to limited resources although plans are underway for an establishment adjacent to Veterans Memorial Park downtown that would encompass shops, dining options and even employment opportunities for current/recently discharged servicemen/women!

In 1865, Streator became part of the new city of Chicago and grew rapidly due to its location on main transportation routes. The village had a post office from 1868 to 1935 and two schools when it first formed. A large cotton gin was built in 1907 and remains in business today as an industrial plant.
