Streator, Illinois was the site of one of America's first major ammunition events when the state hosted a national rifle match in 1875. The event marked the beginning of what would become an annual tradition for NRA members and other outdoor enthusiasts in the area. The Streator Rifle and Pistol Match is now one of the largest rifle matches held each year in Illinois with over 1,000 competitors from across the state. Streator was one of the original towns in what is now Illinois. It was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1827 and became a county seat in 1839. The town gained its present name, Streator, after General James Wilkinson who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1871 but was rebuilt and grew into a large city by the early 20th century. Today, Streator is a major cultural center for the region and home to several museums including the Illinois State Museum and Historic Site.
Streator was one of the original towns in the town of Peoria, Illinois. The first settler in Streator was Nicholas Severson. He arrived in 1814 and built a log cabin on the east side of the creek that flows through town today. In 1817, Peter Krick founded another early settlement called Krickville on the west side of the creek. The first post office at Streator was established in 1819. In 1825, George Winton moved his mill to what is now downtown Streator from across the creek at what is now Dutchtown. It was there that he started to make flour for local markets and for export to other states. By 1830, most of what is now downtown Streator had been developed, with a few small stores and homes scattered around. The business district aroundDutchtown became known as "The Square." In 1834, Anthony Jourdain came to live in Streator and set up a grocery store there which continues to be trade today with over 130 employees including 21 stock clerks who serve customers through computer terminals throughout their operation! Jourdain also built a home here which still stands - it has been restored and includes elements from its original construction dating back to 1840! In 1861, Abraham Lincoln served as an elector at-large for Illinois in Springfield; while living in Peoria he visited John Pemberton's store on South Second Street (now West First Street) where he purchased some property adjacent to present day Harrison Avenue for $2 per acre (!!). This land would become Carondelet Parkland later on! In 1865 General Andrew Johnson entered Springfield as President-elect after defeating Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War; within weeks Johnson had appointed Judge James McNealy as Mayor of Springfield instead of General Halleck because McNealy could speak English better than many others! A new courthouse was constructed soon thereafter near East Capitol Street - this building still stands today (albeit used by various government offices since then) - and it became known as "The White House" due its significant presence within City Hall itself!
