From 1916 to 1919, Streator experienced its first growth as a result of World War I when many residents served in the military or were drafted. In 1925, Streator incorporated as a village and continued to grow slowly until 1990 when it reached its current size with 8,662 residents. Many of these residents commute to work in the city of Chicago or neighboring townships. Today, Streator remains an agricultural community with large tracts of land devoted to corn agriculture and soybean production. In addition to its agricultural focus, Streator also has a significant retail sector including several small businesses along Route 59 which supported local employment opportunities during the early 20th century while also serving as stores for larger local merchants such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney

Streator was one of the most populous communities in Lake County, Illinois, until the early 20th century. It was located on a bend in the river that formed the border between Illinois and Michigan. The town was founded by Levi Streator in 1827 as a small agricultural community on a bluff overlooking the river. By 1850, it had grown to include a school, grocery store, and several tannery businesses. In 1871, Streator became part of the newly created city of Chicago; however, it continued to grow rapidly throughout the 19th century and reached its peak population size by 1900. By then, it had also become a major center for commerce and industry. The late 19th century saw great changes for Streator; first, railroad construction began nearby in 1886rewith many new residents moving into the town. Second, World War II hit Streator hard when many factories closed or were moved away due to wartime military production shortages. However, despite these challenges, Streator slowly regained its former prosperity during postwar years; eventually reaching an all-time high in 2000 with over 50 percent of its economy based on professional services alone. However, recent trends indicate that Streator may be losing some of its momentum - although it still retains important economic values and remains an important cultural node within Lake County overall. For example, there has been significant development around thetown's existing airport since 2002 - providing much needed employment opportunities for local veterans and their families after Operation Iraqi Freedom ended operations there in 2003. Additionally - although not directly related to but nonetheless affecting Streator's fortunes - recent controversies around race have again thrust this community into focus as one of several growing areas of tension across America today (see African American Integration Affairs).

The town was named after him and it grew rapidly during the 19th century as scores of settlers arrived to populate what is now southeastern Illinois. During the early years of its existence, Streator was known for its many agricultural products, including corn, beans, rice and flour. In 1854, the town became an incorporated village and it continued to grow until around 1920 when it ceased to exist as a municipality. Today, there are no buildings remaining from earlier days in Streator and much of the older population has moved away or died off over time. However, some bits of history remain - such as the historic trace-stone bridge that spans the Thames River near downtown.
