Streamwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the border of Streamwood Township and Addison Township. The first Europeans to visit what is now Streamwood were fur traders in 1779. In 1802, the village was organized as a town under the jurisdiction of Chicago. The name "Streamwood" likely comes from two sources: one says that a stream ran through the community, while another claims it was named after General James Wilkinson who fought in the War of 1812. In 1892, when Chicago annexed Addison Township to its city limits, Streamwood became a part of that annexation but continued to use its own name for itself until 1918 when it became part ofChicago again as part of its new plan for municipal government. The village had several schools until Grades 7-12 were consolidated with Addison Township's high school in 1922 which made Streamwood one of only two townships in Cook County not having its own high school (the other being West Side). Today there are just Grade 7-12 students attending River Valley High School and Grades 1-8 attend Eastview Middle School which shares common facilities with both High Schools including an athletic department and music program with neighboring Elgin Community Academy. stream wood IL map
