Streamwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Streamwood was first settled in 1829 by Quakers who arrived from England. After years of skirmishes with other Indian tribes, they were able to build a town on the present site in 1853 and named it after their native stream, Welles Brook. The first post office was established in 1854. In 1861, the town became an incorporated village and changed its name to Streamwood in honor of George Washington Streams (1763-1836). In 1951, Streamwood annexed part of Indianapolis Township; this annexation made it one of three villages within Cook County that had been annexed since 1949. streams running through or nearStreamwood include Welles Brook (north), Fox Run (east), and Calumet Creek (south). Streamwood is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 16,242 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The names of some other nearby towns and villages are also mentioned: Streamwood-Lamont, Streamwood-O'Hare, Streamwood-Bellefontaine, and Brookfield Woods. The community was laid out in 1857 by John Stephenson as part of a large farm called Stephenson's Prairie. A post office was established there in 1859, and the first store opened in 1860. In 1862, Stephenson donated land to build a school on which the present school building was built in 1865. In 1870, he donated land to create a park that included what is now central avenue. A gristmill was built here in 1886; it continues to be used today as a village hall. In 1911–12 when Cook County became female suffrage territory, Streamwood voted not to ratify the women's vote but instead offered its residents male voting privileges so that all citizens could participate equally (the men did this because they felt their voice would not be heard if they did not). This event has been called "the first municipal referendum for women". In 1917–18 when World War I began with Austria-Hungary invading Serbia and Czechoslovakia being invaded by Germany and Austria-Hungary respectively, Streamwood enlisted in the military service with many others from Cook County including Westmont and Elmhurst as part of patriotic duty known as "Duty Week." On November 11th 1918 after days of fasting and prayer all residents met at Town Hall to decide whether or not to become US soldiers fighting against German forces abroad; 93% opted for military service however only about 25% actually served overseas due largely to health concerns brought on by war fever which had reached unprecedented levels across much of northern Illinois at this time After the end of World War I stream wood again enlisted sending more people into military service during Prohibition than any other community in Illinois making it one of few places where alcohol prohibition still applies today . After Prohibition ended stream wood once again embarked on an aggressive marketing campaign providing freezers for local liquor stores
On May 15, 1847, two steamboats, the "Streamwood" and the "Sparrow," collided in the Chicago River. The " Streamwood" was sunk, but the "Sparrow" continued on to her destination. The collision resulted in the death of both vessels' captains and crewmen.
