Streamwood was founded by the brothers Isaac and Amos Winchester in 1836 as a farmstead on the banks of the Wabash River. The Winchester brothers were two of six children born to John and Sarah Winchester. When Amos and Isaac were eleven years old, their father died suddenly, leaving them guardian and trustees for their three younger siblings: Laura (1837-1911), Mary (1839-1925), John (1841-1900). In 1846, when Amos was twenty-one years old, he married Deborah Warner; they had four children: Deborah (b. 1847), Harry (b. 1850), Alice (b. 1852) and Edwin II (b. 1854). In 1861 Brigham Young appointed Amos Winchester bishopric president of Utah Territory; his brother Isaac served concurrently as one of his counselors with responsibility for all ecclesiastical duties within that territory including education and missionary work among Native Americans. On April 4, 1865 Brigham Young issued an order appointing both men to serve simultaneously as bishops in what would be known as "the Great Western Schism." A few months later on October 15 Ames Winchester resigned from his position due to health problems that would prevent him from traveling eastward to preside over new missions; Harry Wickham took his place effective November 3rd On December 12th 1870 Samuel Morse visited Streamwood for several hours while arrangements were being made for a telegraph line between Chicago and Rock Island via Bloomington - this event is generally regarded as the day that wire services first became available in America In 1888 George Washington Carver came to Streamwood seeking inspiration for his agricultural experiments near Carbondale which led to Arbor Viticulture Company development adjacent to stream bank In 1912 local boy Heman Gardner established Gardner Chevrolet & Ford dealership opposite railroad tracks on north side of town c 1925 First African American resident when James Addison purchased home at corner of First Street & Elm

In 1836, a group of farmers in what is now Streamwood, Illinois decided to build a gristmill on the banks of the Rock River. The mill was built and operated by the families of John G. Nicol and James H. Smith from 1836 until 1851. In 1850, the mill was sold to Samuel L. Morse and his sons who continued to operate it until it burned down in 1906.
