Streamwood is located on a small stream that runs through the center of the town, and it has a school system which serves most of the town and some unincorporated areas. The first residents in what would become Streamwood were two families who arrived from Ireland in 1836. They named their settlement after Sir John Chiswick, 4th Baronet (1792–1841), one of England's leading naturalists and men of science. In 1849, Abraham Lincoln visited Streamwood while he was campaigning for election as President of the United States; during his visit, he made an speech at the home of Judge Ewing in which he praised Streamwood as "a place where honest toil brings happiness". In 1870, when Illinois became a state, Streamwood became its seat with incorporation by Act No. 594 of that year. The original store building still stands on Main Street in town today and can be seen from many places within town due to its prominent location on main street. From 1870 until 1925, all public schools were conducted out-of-town by State Normal School Board students traveling toubsville every day for classes; however this program ended when private schools took over statewide responsibility for education in 1925 under then Superintendent Charles Sonderling (1912-1963).
