It is within the Chicago-Naperville-Bethpage School District and has a zip code of 60451. The history of Sterling begins with one man, Levi Richardson. Richardson built a log cabin in 1847 on what is now Sterling Road. He named his settlement after himself and his brother-in-law, James Gentry. The first post office was established in 1850, and it operated for six years under the name of Indianola. In 1852, Richardson married Lula Hinton and moved to Sterling from Indianola to take on more responsibilities as a settler. Over time, he developed four cotton plantations which yielded over two million pounds of cotton output per year between 1865 and 1890. In 1906, John Daugherty opened up shop at the corner of Main Street and State Route 64 (later renamedState Route 169) in what is now downtown Sterling. This led to the growth of downtown Sterling as an important shopping center for residents throughout McHenry County and into neighboring Kane County during this time period.. Daugherty's store served as an inspiration for many other businesses that followed him over the years; these include Aldi Grocery (1948), JCPenney (1964), Sears Holdings Corporation (1986), Mervyn's Tavern & Grill (1988), Starbuck's Coffee House & Cafe (1991), Applebee's Restaurant(1999) and Presentation Hall Pizza Place(2004).
