Sterling, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located on the eastern edge of McLean County and is bordered by Sangamon County to the east and north, Putnam County to the west, and St. Clair County to the south. Sterling is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Sterling was James Taylor who arrived in 1824. In 1827, John Armstrong moved there from Putnam County with his family. The townsite was named after General David Dixon who defeated Native American forces at what is now known as Battle of Fort Dearborn on November 3, 1827. According to legend, General Dixon ordered his troops to fire upon any Indians who attempted to cross the river into Putnam County; this led to many Indian deaths since they were not allowed across the river without a white person accompanying them (Larson). There are many stories about early settlers in Sterling including one that says John Armstrong married a girl from Bloomington whom he met while traveling through Indiana on his way home from battlefronts; she died soon after their marriage when he returned home sickeningly ill (Larson). Another story tells of how two brothers founded a grocery store in town which became very successful and later donated its land for a school system that still operates today (Dixon). In 1881, James Auld bought 5 acres of land in town for $2 per acre (Kerridge). He built an eight-room log cabin called "Auld's Cabin" which still stands today near Center Street and State Route 16th Avenue North. A few years later he added another room/hall/apartment for himself and his family before selling it all together for $10 per acre (Kerridge). This showy display of wealth made him one of Sterling's earliest entrepreneurs; within 10 years or so he had developed 2 businesses: lumberyard/papermill & agriculture store/canned goods store - both thriving until 1906 when they went out of business due to prohibition (Kerridge p 9-10). The main industry during these early days was farming but soon new industries cropped up such as transportation equipment manufacturing by J.C.'s Manufacturing Company which started up around 1911 as J&J Transportation Equipment Corporation Ltd.; it became nationally well-known under company president Jack Jarvis...in 1951 it merged with Iveco Motor Corporation forming Iveco Chrysler Dodge Ramification LLC) In 1916 local farmers formed the advisory board for Will Rogers National Forest just east of town along State Route 6th Street; these men decided that Sterling should have its own forest because other communities were not doing enough to help preserve tree growth within their boundaries (Wright p 7-8). Some famous people who joined this group include future President Harry S Truman and then Senatorial candidate Robert LaFollette Sr.. It wasn't long before community spirit began taking over where government inaction left off; within 5 years or so all 8 residents on the advisory board had passed away leaving only 4 residents remaining active members - an example of democracy at work! After World War II came along and demand for jobs grew throughout America many families began moving away from rural small towns towards larger cities but Sterling never lost its identity despite large numbers passing away over time (Hershberger p xxiv+xxviii); this has continued even through recent times with only 2 residents remaining active members working at present day attractions like Heritage Hallieres casino hotel & golf course adjacent thereto)
