Sterling is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,045 at the 2010 census. Sterling is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located in the northwest corner of Cook County and straddles the border of Kane and DuPage counties. The town was founded by John Sterling in 1856 as a farmers' settlement on the edge of what is now Sterling Heights. After years of growth and development, it became an incorporated village in 1907. That year, its population reached 10,000 people. It grew rapidly during World War I (1918-19) when many men from nearby Kaneville enlisted to fight on the side of America's war effort; Sterling's quota for soldiers was 2 percent of its total population but it averaged 5 percent due to its size and location. During World War II (1939-1945), despite being hit hard by the Great Depression (1929-33), Sterling created over 100 jobs in munitions manufacturing with programs such as "Battle Bags" which distributed food to soldiers during their overseas campaigns; these Bag program jobs lasted until 1945 when they were eliminated due to budget cuts that came about as a result of World War II efforts to defeat Nazi Germany

Sterling, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the banks of the Hunting Creek River and has a population of approximately 690. Sterling was incorporated as a town on December 4, 1871. The first post office in Sterling opened on January 7, 1872. The first store in Sterling was established by James Hutton and his son-in-law John Cunningham. The community was named for General James Fenton Sterling who served as governor of Illinois from 1865 to 1867 and as an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1896, Gifford Wimpole donated land to make up part of what is now downtown Sterling. On November 3rd of that year, the village adopted a new charter which provided for school board elections every five years and for meetinghouses to be built at irregular intervals throughout town. The first school board members were Jno Pritchard (1893-1904), Homer Booth (1905-1920), Harry Larkin (1920-1927), Sallie Barnett (1927-1968) and Ralph Barrett (1968-1982). In 1970, sterling council voted not to annex neighboring township Clinton Township because they felt that it would increase traffic congestion within their own boundaries while reducing services offered by the two townships combined

The first store in Sterling was built on Main Street in 1838 and contained a wagon shop, a blacksmith shop, and a gristmill. By 1870, the population of Sterling had grown to over 100 residents. In 1880, sterling became an incorporated village with its own government and school system. The Pony Express Train Depot was located at 8th and Wabash Streets in Sterling from 1861-1867.
