Sterling was founded in 1881 by two brothers, James and John Sterling. The original home of the Sterling family was on the corner of Elm and Cherry Streets. In 1907, the brothers bought land south of the tracks and built what is now the town's main square on that acreage. The name "Sterling" originated from this square. The community grew rapidly during World War II because many residents served in the military or were drafted into service. After the war, Sterling became an agricultural center due to its large number of farms and its location along Route 20 (now Interstate 94). Sterling is a small town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located on the east side of central Macomb County and is part of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Area. The area around Sterling has been inhabited by the Hennepin tribe since pre-historic times. In 1814, when General Winfield Scott defeated Drury’s cavalry at Peoria Heights, he named his victory Instant Township in honor of James K. Polk, then Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War and future President of the United States. Sterling began as a Methodist Mission Station established in 1824 by Reverend James Kishwaukee and his wife Lois (née Lyon). Rev. Kishwaukee had come from nearby Streator to preach in this new community which had been founded on land that once belonged to the Hennepin tribe. At first there were only 50 residents in what is now Sterling Township; but by 1830 there were 400 people living here including many young men who had left their families behind to join the army during the American Civil War (1861-65). After Union troops burned down all but one building in downtown Sterling in 1865, local citizens rebuilt it using local materials and labor within two years with help from $5,000 donations from Seventh Regiment Major General John Cushing McClellan (1863-1921), president of McCormick & Company Paper Merchants and Trustees Company Inc., an organization led by industrialist Andrew Carnegie (1856-1920). The post office was established at Sterling in 1827; it served until it was discontinued in 1906 because mail service between Lafayette (the county seat) and Sterling was available only via stagecoach connections to Grand Rapids instead because those routes were used for freight traffic instead of passenger travel. During World War I (1914-1918), sterling became an unofficial military hospital due to its location on Ridge Road near DeKalb County Line where wounded soldiers could be treated before they were sent back home. When that road opened up again following World War II (1939-1945), much more traffic through town came into use because it connected with I–94 just north of town center thanks to improvements made along that freeway during those years including a bypass road connecting Interstate Highway 94 with State Route 90 northwest of town center which also connected I–94 with State Route 3 south off Hastings Loop Road southwest of town center which linked I–294 with US Highway 11 north/southwest of town center which provided access to Dodge City across State Route 90 southeast from town center.) The original schoolhouse still stands today inside what used to be the local grocery store adjacent to exit 5 off Interstate Highway 94 about half way between downtown Sterling and Quad Cities Airport outside present day Quad Cities Mills shopping mall although muchhas changed within that general area over time such as replacement parts for roofing etc... In recent years efforts have been made throughout Merrillville Township west side growing out towards Quad Cities Airport development plan would include a large family oriented resort type park or entertainment complex housing lodging units retail stores etc... development plans have faced opposition from some residents who feel their homes will be destroyed or displaced if anything happens while others are supportive given current economic conditions
