In 1830, Fenton also began selling newspapers which he distributed through his store into nearby towns such as Peoria and Urbana. In 1837, Jethro Gibbs founded what became known as Gibbs Mill on the east bank of the Kankakee River opposite present day Sterling Heights across from where he had previously built his mill with help from his brother Moses Gibbs. This mill produced flour for local residents until it burned down in 1865; however, parts remain standing today as a museum piece called "Gibbs Mill House." In 1840, George Washington Dixon donated land to be developed into a town site; this land would later become downtown Sterling Heights where businesses still operate today including Sears Roebuck & Co., Chrysler Corporation, Wells Fargo Bank & Company and Ford Motor Company among others during recent decades when it has been redeveloped numerous times primarily using modern architecture which has resulted in some impressive landmarks like One Michigan Center being erected on one portion while smaller buildings have been replaced or renovated elsewhere within its boundaries creating an ever-changing skyline view while preserving much character original to each building period individualized development typical both before/during/since world wars era although large numbers new factories were constructed ensuing during Cold War another major redevelopment taking place nowmostly residential areas putting additional strain especially against limited public transportation options most recently(2015) partial demolition via non-profit group converting former auto dealership into apartment complex largest single redevelopment project affecting downtown area since war ended plus loss of two thirds of street name narrows loss overall but leaves significant district containing many historical sites many worth exploring including several churches preserved inside historic district Trust for Historic Preservation certified

Polk, who served as the 29th president of the United States and as secretary of state under Franklin D. Roosevelt. The community was first settled in 1873 by people from nearby Clearfield Township. Sterling's post office opened in 1875 and remained open until it closed in 1990. The town of Sterling was laid out on a tract of land that had been donated by Jacob Sterrett to the township for development purposes only; he did not own any land within the township itself. In 1876, residents voted to incorporate as a village. On October 15, 1976, Sterling became an independent municipality with a governing board made up of four citizens appointed by the village trustees. On November 4, 1978, voters approved a proposition to change the name of the town to "Sterling" after General James K. Polk (29th president of the United States). The change took effect on December 1st and has been used ever since as its municipal name according to current law
