Sterling is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 2,612 at the 2010 census. Sterling was founded in 1868 by John and Eliza Sterling. It is named after Ernest Sterling, who donated land to the town. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in 1868 from Indiana. In 1870, they built a cabin on the east side of the current community. They called their settlement Sterling because it was near one of their farms in Indiana. The first store opened in 1871 and sold goods such as flour, sugar, butter and eggs. A post office was opened in 1880 and served the town until 1907 when it moved to Carbondale. The first school opened in 1872 and taught grades one through twelve. In 1895, three additions were made to the community: a church (built 1898), a garage (1903) and an opera house (1907). During World War I, Sterling helped support the war effort by producing food for soldiers on site of military camps across Illinois. After hostilities ended in 1918, many residents left for various reasons including economic hardship or lack of opportunity during peacetime times; however, some returned over time to help rebuild sterling businesses and make new contributions to society . From 1951-1960, Sterling had its own television station which aired programming from Chicago affiliate WGN-TV
The Sterling community was founded in 1881 when two families, the Grannis and the Kapp, moved from a farmstead on the banks of the Des Plaines River to a new land grant near present-day Sterling. The first post office in the community was established in 1882. In 1895, an addition to the community was erected on what is now known as Maple Street. By 1905, there were over 100 residents in Sterling. The population of Sterling decreased during World War I because many people volunteered for military service. However, after the war ended, growth resumed and by 1920 there were over 200 residents living in Sterling. In 1927, Mrs. Jane Addams donated land to create a school district which would include Sterling and other nearby communities. The Addams School District served Sterling until it merged with Rome Township School District in 2003. Sterling experienced several natural disasters during its history including a severe winter storm that struck in 1925 and 1933; a tornado that touched down near the community on December 5, 1951; and a fire that burned through much of sterling on October 13, 1957
