Sterling, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 2,584 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located on the east side of the Chicago River and is bordered by the communities of Lemont to the north, Austin to the south, and Oak Park to the west. The first settlers in Sterling were farmers who came from Canada in 1836. In 1847, they built a gristmill on Harbison Creek which still stands today. The mill produced flour for local markets and also manufactured cheese and other food items. By 1850, there were 10 families living in Sterling. The town was platted in 1854 and named for General James G. Sterling who had been killed during World War I. In 1870, two brothers founded an insurance company that became one of Illinois' largest insurers until it merged with American Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1907. Afterward, Sterling became an important center for banking and commerce with many businesses existing until after World War II when industry declined overall due to factors such as automation and imports competition. However, some businesses have continued to operate through various incarnations including restaurant chains like Olive Garden and Qdoba Mexican Grill; a movie theater called Regal Cinemas; a water filtration plant; as well as several thousand homes currently occupied by people throughout central Cook County . During this time period there were also numerous civic projects such as building community halls (the original one being constructed in 1911), creating parks (includingone now known as Lakeview Park), constructing new schools (like Butler High School), or expanding old ones (like First United Methodist Church). One notable project that did not take place however was completing a highway connectingChicago with Garysburg via Aurora-Marengo-Everest via Lincolnshire-Highland Heights . There are now plans underway to resurface part of Route 60 which would make this possible but no date has yet been set for when it will happen

The first commercial application of this technology was with the World War II Japanese I- garrisoned at Rabaul in New Britain Island, Australia using Fetterman Lasers to shoot down enemy bombers over their airfields during the Battle of Rabaul (1942). By 1949, weapon lasers had becomecommon on battlefields all over the world due to their ability to penetrate large numbers of troops with little loss of life or damage to equipment

Sterling is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,090 at the 2010 census. Sterling was platted in 1879. It became a village in 1961 and a city in 1998. Sterling is located on the border of Kane County and McLean Township, near Carbondale and Waukegan. The community began as an agricultural center with large stocks of corn, beans, soybeans, wheat and other crops. The first post office opened in 1881. The name of the town came from nearby sterling (now Carbondale) then one of the largest zinc mines on the Great Lakes region. In 1902 local merchants formed the Sterling Civic Association to promote growth in the town by organizing events such as dances and picnics. By 1908 there were also two churches - First Presbyterian (1891) and Methodist (1902). Manufacturing enterprises included a millinery store, a grocer's store and two auto dealerships until 1967 when they closed down due to industry consolidation within Illinois; later that year Sterling joined Chicago's "Ring of Steel" program for manufacturing defense-related products during World War II under contract with General Motors Corporation.. In 1960 Sterling's first municipal building was erected on Main Street which served as City Hall until 1980 when it was replaced by a new City Hall which is still used today as part of city government services In 2001 Sterling had its own school system - Sterling Community School District #1 . The original school building on Main Street served as district headquarters until 2006 when it burned down In 2007-2008 another school building was built on Village Square Drive adjacent to city hall Today nearly all citizens who live within limits of sterling attend either Central High School or Starr Senior High School
