He built the Sheldon Mill which still stands today as a working mill and tourist attraction. In 1868, Samuel Slater settled in Sterling and started Slater's Drug Store which remains open today as one of the oldest drugstores in Springfield. In 1914, Jens Olsen opened Olson's Bank which became one of the largest banks in town until it merged with First National Bank in 1978. In 1916, Harry Weiser opened Weiser's Hardware store which became one of Springfield's most popular stores until it closed its doors in 2002. In 1930, Sterling purchased land from the estate of James Buchanan for $1,000 and began development of what would become known as "the new village". The village included a grocery store, post office, two churches (the First Baptist Church and Christ Episcopal Church), two schools (The consolidated high school and Sterling Elementary School), two recreational areas (the old floodplain park now known as Northwoods Park/Bellefontaine Lake) and 14 houses. The Village Green also served as an outdoor movie theater during summertime from 1935-1946 before being replaced by the current movie theater complex thatopened in 2006 on Airport Road near Interstate 94th Street just east of downtown Springfield The new village rededicated its first meeting room on October 31st 1945 when Mayor Waddell pronounced all inhabitants citizens for once again functioning together as an organized unit following World War II service bonds totaling $2 million bought by local businessmen under President Harry S Truman at an auction held at Cook County Stadium on November 16th 1945 On July 10th 1954 voters rejected incorporation into a city Limits referendum by 53% to 47%. This left Sterling unincorporated but continued to exist under state jurisdiction through special rules governing villages set forth by statute passed by then Governor Otto Kerrey

Sterling is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. Sterling was founded in 1846 by James and Anna Sterling. It is named after Sterling, England. The first post office in Sterling was established in 1847. In 1870, the city of Sterling incorporated as a village. The population of the City of Sterling declined to 706 by 2000; however it has since rebounded to 1,030 residents as of the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Sterling was James who arrived there from England in 1846 and built a cabin on the site that is still standing today. He and his wife Anna were pioneers in this area and are buried there with their children John and Ann (born 1840). In 1870, when sterling became a village, Anna donated land for a public square which still stands today and serves as the heart of the Village today. During its early years, sterling had only two stores (the first being built on present day First Street) but over time it grew into one of central Illinois' most vibrant communities with several restaurants, bars/pubs/libraries/grainsharing businesses along First Street including Pritchard's grocery store which remains open today), several churches (one being built on present day Elmwood Avenue), three schools - allgrades K-8th grade through high school - two parks - one football team stadium that seated up to 50 people also home field for many local teams such as the White Sox baseball team during their days as an affiliate with Chicago Cubs; five residences for governmental use including one dating back to 1852 when territorial government began operations hereabouts; six acres or morecommercial property developed hereabouts between 1880-1920 primarily around First Street making it one of central Illinois' most important commercial corridors Notable residents who lived or worked here over time include: Jens Christensen (1892-1972), Lester Carlson (1901-1991), Loretta Clarkson (1914-2006), Harry Eilersen (1920-1995), Martha Ellison Olcott(1926-)
