Sterling is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 775 at the 2000 census. Sterling is located on the border of McLean and Clearfield counties. It is bordered by Carbondale to the north, Carbondale-Normal to the east, Normal to the south, and Willmore to the west. The township was organized in 1872 and named for James Q. Sterling, an early settler in that area. In 1881, it had a population of 304 people and was part of theNormal School District. Sterling Sr., who came to this area in 1847 from Canada with his family. He built a home on what are now known as North Main Street and East German Road near Carbondale when he first arrived hereabouts. From this home, he ran a general store which functioned as both a social center and political hub during those early days of village life hereabouts - one of the first villages in McLean County! For many years after Mr. Sterling's death in 1902 (aged 83), his wife managed this business until her death some years later also; then it passed through their son's hands until it finally went into management by descendants of MrSterling himself about 1965 or 1966 - thus marking yet another milestone for this beautiful little town nestled among rolling hills just outside Carbondale! folks hereabouts still celebrate "Q Day" every year on... September 11th somehow someway!
