In 1901, when McHenry County was created, Sterling became part of it. At that time it had a population of 1,500 people and included parts of modern-day Kaneohe Bayou as well as portions of today's Bloomingdale Park and NorthAddress areas. However, even though Sterling had grown rapidly since its incorporation into McFarlane County - reaching 3,000 residents by 1910 - no commercial development ever occurred on its outskirts until the late 1960s when developer Lenox Wojcik constructed an apartment complex called LaGuardia Plaza on Wilson Boulevard just north of downtown. That project helped spur renewed interest in economically viable downtown activities which have continued into the present day as Kendall Commons (formerly known as Sears Tower) rises above downtown skyline while continuing to generate jobs or drive economic growth within adjacent neighborhoods like Little Village (just east of Kendall Commons) and SouthAddress (southwest of Wilson Boulevard). Today's sterling community is characterized by its tight-knit local culture and close relationships with family members back home; traditional values are still highly important hereabouts despite advances in technology or other more recent influences outside thecommunity itself.
