For most of its history it has been a farming community with few industry choices and little access to outside resources. The first settlers to Steger were farmers who came from Germany in 1814. They had arrived on horseback and landed on the east side of the Kankakee River about three miles west of today's Steger. The village was named after Johann Friedrich Steiger, one of the original settlers. He donated land that would be used for a farmstead and later built a mill on the banks of the river. In 1851, when Macomb County was created, part of what would become Steger Township was included within it. In 1855, Samuel Witte bought 160 acres (62 hectares) south-west of present day SteGER from Johann Friedrich Steiger and began developing it into a farming community with several industries such as harnessing sheep and tanning hides. However, these ventures didn't last long because they were not able to compete with larger farming communities closer to Chicago; by 1860 only 5 families still lived inSteGER Village along with 1 storekeeper and 9 workers out of a total population of 20 residents (). Despite this lacklustre start, over time villagers started investing their money into new businesses like vacation rentals (), truck manufacturing (), grocery stores () and even real estate development (). These successes led to increased demand for services like plumbing services () which became more difficult to find during prohibition era (). In 1984 another business venture - this timeloaned money - finally allowed STEGER Village to achieve significant prosperity thanks to advances in technology such as cellular phone service (). In recent years STEGER has transitioned from being an agricultural community focused on corn ethanol production towards becoming an increasingly diverse economy based around health care services (), professional sports teams () and other related businesses (). This growth has lead to some challenges however including large majorities white (91%)and low rates of minority representation (-23%)
