Steger is a town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Steger is home to the Steger Museum and Historic District. It has been written that "the town of Steger stands out as one of the most innovative and successful small towns in America." The name comes from John F. Steiger who purchased land there in 1868 and built a sawmill (later renamed the Steiger Lumber Company). The community's early years were difficult; it was founded on November 2, 1881, by three men who had just finished a trek from Michigan through what is now Minnesota Territory. They arrived at what is now known as East Main Street and started building a cabin which they called "The Prairie". That same year, the first school opened in SteGER with five students. The town's first post office was established on December 10, 1881. One of the original businesses in SteGER was led by Fred Rufus Davenport who operated an ice cream stand on Main Street for many years until he sold it to Harry Bendixen in 1928. That stand became one of the favorites of local residents because it offered Vanilla Ice Cream with real whipped cream for only $1 per item when it opened! In 1951, Davenport Elementary School moved to its present location across from Municipal Services Building after having been used as a stable for several years prior (it still stands today). In 1957-58, The Kipling Foundation sent their then Director of English Programs to speak at an annual meeting of educators at Eastern Illinois University located near wherepresent-day Southington High School sits today (Kipling later served as Assistant State Superintendent Of Public Instruction during his time in Illinois). At this meeting, representatives from STEGER stopped by introduced themselves and asked if anyone wanted to open up a school there since they knew there would be demand! A group rose up including Mrs. Mildred Stimpson who began teaching second grade right after KIPP left and Ladies Home Journal donated land for her classroom! Within months she had taught eighty fifth graders using materials she stockpiled before coming to STEGER! After much deliberation among parents and teachers alike Mrs. Stimpson decided that steGER should have its own high school – soon after being given approval by the Macomb County Board Of Education! On September 3rd 1959 former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited STEGER while on her way back from visiting Rockford IL-she stayed overnight at Lovejoy Manor which also became home to about seventy kids hosted by MrsSue McCloskey & me during our pre-kindergarten days here] ]]. Mrs Roosevelt stated that “I like your school” we were so excited all Mr McCloskey could do was give her a big hug]

The town was founded by George Steger and his wife Sarah on a farmstead east of Springfield in 1837. In 1846, Steger moved to what is now Steger Township and acquired a millrace that became known as "The turning point." In 1863, Steger had its first post office and in 1868 it had its first school. The township was organized in 1869. During World War II, Steger produced more than one million rounds of ammunition for the military. In 1957-1959, the town erected two large concrete blocks to memorialize those killed or injured during World War II. These were later supplanted by two smaller blocks which still stand today. He also helped found Lincoln University in 2007 and currently chairs the university's board of trustees
On February 15, 1847, the first Gottlieb Steger store opened in Steger, Illinois. The store was operated by Gottlieb Steger and his brother-in-law Julius Kapp. The company became one of the leading retail businesses in Illinois. In 1912, the company merged with J.C. Penney to form Sears Holdings Corporation.
