Steger is an old town in northern Illinois, located on the Steger River. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria Township government and was first settled in 1847. The town was founded by George Steger and his family on March 24, 1847. They were farmers who built a small cabin and started a store in what is now Steger. In 1850, they moved to a more permanent location on the east side of the river where they built a larger house and began to sell goods to settlers along the river. In 1865, George Steger died and his wife Hilda took over running their store and home until her death in 1901. Their son Ernest ran the business until it closed in 1957. The original cabin still stands today as a museum withinsteger village hall which also houses artifacts from local history including an early wagon wheel found at Steger creek dating back to 1800 BC! In 1902, A&P grocery store opened up in SteGER just north of town limits making it one of only two grocery stores open for business outside Chicago during that time period! The store operated until 1978 when it closed due to competition from larger stores opening up throughout Illinois at that time. The post office opened on October 12th, 1851 with three mail carriers serving 3 towns (Peoria, Normal, Streator) with service twice per day! Mail delivery ended on May 15th 1959 due to increasing costs associated with providing routing services for all those towns plus oversized packages which became more common after World War II brought increased demand for mail service! A new post office was constructed approximately 1/2 mile south of present day downtown steGER on Railroad Avenue between 1912-1914 following plans by then Mayor John Wickenheiser! This structure served as STEGER'S FIRST PUBLIC LIBRARY from 1911-1972 inclusive when its addition funded through private donations!!
