It borders the towns of Carbondale to the north and East Stroudsburg to the east. According to the 2010 census, Steger has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. The village lies on both banks of the creek that runs through it, just south of its main road. North of town are rolling hills that rise to about above mean sea level; from here downriver you can see Chicago's Loop cityscape spread out before you. As far back as 1847 there were reports by travelers who stopped in Steger about an Indian tribe known as "the Ottawas". In 1861 General James Hays sent troops under Colonel J.Q. Gibson into SteGER because he suspected mail fraud being perpetrated by some residents there; on arrival they discovered that only goods valued over $50 had been delivered, while all other packages had been delivered without charge or delay! No arrests were made but few details remain about what actually happened next because no contemporary evidence exists anywhere else in Cook County... However, something must have happened because within a few years after this first encounter with Native Americans in SteGER people started referring to themselves simply as "the Indians" or "the Ottawas". After spending some time in the community, he decided that it would be more convenient and feasible to live near Chicago than carry around all those miles of traveling each day! He purchased property here in 1840 and started living permanently within walking distance of his office buildings today (the White House and Capitol Building). Lincoln also developed close ties with local farmers here; one reason he chose SteGER as his home base during the early months of his presidency. In 1865-66 when Union troops invaded Illinois and captured Cairo (then part of Decatur County), much damage was done to infrastructure: bridges were destroyed, mills were burned down or taken over by Union forces, and roads were impassable because of mudslides caused by floods/trees falling from the sky!
