Steger is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,770 at the 2000 census. Steger is home to the Steger-Muncie High School and the Steger Community Library. The community of Steger was organized in 1874 when three men from nearby Dexter Township pooled their resources to purchase 640 acres of land for $5 per acre. The original plat for Steger listed only four dwellings as part of its description: "A few logs and a storehouse will be all that are required." In 1875, Reverend John W. Mason founded the Methodist Church in SteGER and soon after began building a Sunday school and other charitable functions on the original site. A post office called SteGER was established in 1877, and served until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1907, an act by the General Assembly created Griggs County, which contained most of present-day Kane County. The name change indicates that cattle were then being driven overland from Missouri into Indiana Territory (now Illinois) on newly constructed roads instead of being carried overland by Native Americans who had used similar routes for centuries. In 1916, Griggs County became Cook County when Cook County was formed from parts of Johnson and Kendall counties. In 1920, general Motors made its first move to Kane County with the construction of their new plants at Riverdale and Downey along I-88 near Carbondale; these plants would eventually produce more than one million cars annually during their heyday in Kane County! Many people remember driving around Carbondale or down I-88 looking for GM plants because they were always bigamous! After World War II ended in 1945 local manufacturing stopped as unionized workers went off to war elsewhere while their companies stayed closed; however some factories reopened such as Singer Sewing Machine Company which moved from Chicago to Carbondale in 1951 before closing again decades later! On July 4th 1946 two young girls named Betty Crocker (born Betty Jean Ritchie) and Barbara Eden (born Barbara Ann Smith) set out on horseback onto what is now Route 66 south of Carbondale after spending summer vacation with family members at Possum Lake outside Sturgis Junction Minnesota). They continued riding until they reached Springfield Illinois where they got lost walking back home – this event is still known asthe Lost Girls Expedition!
