In 1868, Steger became one of twenty two towns to join the Illinois Central Railroad (IC) mainline from north to south through central Illinois. In 1907, IC built a station at Steger and began passenger trains serving the community with Pullman sleepers from Joliet Junction northwest to Chicago Union Station east of Steger on the main line. The population of SteGER grew steadily until World War II when it plummeted due to military service and rationing; however, it has slowly been growing back since then thanks to new businesses and residents moving into the area during recent decades. Today, SteGER is known for its wide variety of shopping malls including three large Sears Rodale stores as well as an assortment of smaller shops and restaurants locate within easy walking distance of each other throughout much of downtown StEGER ZIP code 60115; making it one of most vibrant communities in all of Cook County!

Steger is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Steger was John White (1807-1892). He and his wife Margaret built a log cabin in 1836 on the south side of present day Bell Road. In 1837, David Denton arrived from Kentucky and platted what would become Steger Township on November 5, 1837. The first post office in Steger was established on December 7, 1840 by James Gorman with the name "New Lugen". The current building was built in 1907 and bears his name. On January 1, 1860, the town of Steger gained city status when it became one of twelve townships formed within Cook County by an act of Congress known as the Act to Consolidate Townships. On April 14, 1886 John Wetherbee died after a long battle with tuberculosis which had been affecting him for some time before that date. He is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery near Chicago. Wetherbee is also commemorated through a plaque located near his home on School Road in SteGER corner lot number 114BP
In 1836, the first Steger post office was established. It was located on the east side of town. In 1847, a store and hotel were built in Steger. The first school in Steger was organized in 1868. The first doctor in Steger was Dr. John Sutter who came to Steger from Illinois in 1869.
