However, during World War II (1939-1945), SteGER experienced significant economic restructuring which caused many jobs to be lost as production shifted to other plants outside of Illinois. After the war ended, STEGER regained some importance as a residential communities due to new construction projects such as subdivisions along Route 56. However, more recent economic turmoil has led to job loss and declining population figures over recent years."
