Steger is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Steger were Frenchmen and their Indian friend, Pierre-Alexandre de Laclotte. As early as 1768, Steger was part of the General France Purchase from Spain and was known as "New France". In 1815, SteGER became a township within Cook County. On February 14, 1836, it became a city when its incorporation charter was granted by the Illinois Legislature. On November 20, 1857 (the date of Abraham Lincoln's inauguration), SteGER was one of eighteen townships in Cook County to become the City of Chicago with a population over one thousand people (). At that time it was reported that most citizens resided along State Street between Randolph and Wells streets; but this may be an exaggeration as many properties were only annexed after Chicago's incorporation. The growth of Chicago led to decreased development around SteGER which began to Decline rapidly during World War II because so much manufacturing had moved away from areas such as Dearborn Heights or Schaumburg due to wartime shortages caused by the war effort and consequent increase in prices for necessities like food and gasoline. However new businesses started up again during postwar years but they have since disappeared due to low business rates in town nowaday compared to other nearby cities with more restrictive zoning ordinances which has taken its toll on economic development throughout history .

Steger is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to set foot in Steger was Nicholas Steger on April 14, 1815 when he and four others left from Rock Island for what would be their final voyage across the Great Lakes. SteGER became an innkeeper and trader in what is now Steger. On December 17, 1840, the first post office in Steger opened with Wm Hynes as its first agent. In 1847, George Averill erected a gristmill which soon became one of the most important mills in the community. In 1861-1862 John Crouch built a sawmill and gristmill on current site of present day Grille Street/Route 66. These mills were among earliest examples of large scale spinning and manufacturing within walking distance of each other in central Illinoisans’ lives. A hotel called “The Gilded Cage” was built by James Tynan near where Main Street now intersects Route 66 about 1915-1916; it is no longer extant but can be seen from Interstate 95 southbound between McLean County lines. One early resident who had some connection with SteGER during its early years was Julius Caesar Steinmetz (1813-1893). He served as justice of peace for Cook County from 1851 to 1863 and also representedSteGER on various city councils throughout his career including posts on both sides of River South Avenue bridge over Des Plaines River from 1865 to 1867; he also served as recorder for Cook County from 1868 until his death at age 86 years old on February 20th 1893 after serving without interruption for 56 years! In 1916 Ziegfeld brothers bought a controlling interest in The Gilded Cage Hotel/ Casino located adjacent lot east of present day Grille Street; they renamed it “The Riviera” – eventually replaced by Trump Taj Mahal casino which opened February 16th 1984.) One other early resident associated with STEGER during its early years was Jules Vail (baptized November 15th 1800). He arrived herefrom Terre Haute IL about 1850 settling west side Lots 6 & 7 north side corner road just east side Amboy Road farmstead thence west side Amboy Road to Lot 8 east side corner road then north side line Of Amboy Road & Rolla Rd thence easterly along rolla Rd starting point opposite original location & terminating at lot 8 near intersection today's I-95 exit)
The town of Steger, Illinois was founded in 1851 by John & Anna Schaefer. The first post office was established in Steger in 1853. In 1870, the steamer "Pioneer" brought settlers to Steger from Ohio and Indiana. The town became a railroad town in 1879. In 1903, the old steamboat dock was replaced by a new one that is still used today. The community acquired its current name of Steger in 1907 when the first general store opened there.
