George started making holsters in 1869 and has been making holsters ever since. His holsters are known for their quality and durability. In 1976, George passed away and his holster company continued to operate under his son, Todd Steger. The Steger Armory was founded in 1847 by Captain Christian Steger. It served as a local armory until it closed in 1916.
Steger is a small town in central Illinois, about 25 miles southeast of Chicago. The population was 5,032 at the 2010 census. The village of Steger was platted in 1854 and named for George Steger, an entrepreneur who founded the first grocery store in Steger. The village became a U.S. Post Office school district in 1907 and then a township in 1932. In 1955, the Township decided to create its own police department and name it the "Steger Police Department". In 1957, the Township approved a request by the Village to annex part of Steger so that the Village could build new housing developments there. On November 2, 1959, voters chose to annex only 1/3 of Steger while keeping all other aspects of theVillage separate from SteGER residents as part of their local government reorganization initiative known as "The New Deal". On January 1, 1960, after more than three years of deliberations and community input from both villages and township officials alike, STEGER's new Township-wide government officially came into effect with Mayor John Wirth as its first executive director/chief administrator. That same year saw STEGER's inaugural parade which included floats made up entirelyof STEGER citizens! For many years following this event (and through countless other community events),the parade served as an important focal point for celebrations and memories throughoutSTEGER...including tradeshows,, Banquet Dinners,, etc., making it one of township's most popular attractions! Steger is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1857 by German immigrants who arrived in Steger on the Steger-Rosenfeld Railroad. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1880 had a population of 4,500. A new post office was opened in 1886 and Steger became an incorporated city in 1888. The economic decline of the 1920s caused much social upheaval and physical destruction; however, the community bounced back following World War II with growth rate averaging over 10% per year until the late 1990s when it began to experience rapid declines. In 2002, Steger experienced its first demographic loss since 1940 when all but one family left for good.
The first settler in Steger, Illinois was Nicholas Fenton who arrived in 1819. The town was founded on a ranch that was bought by David Steger. In 1826, the town had a population of seventy-two people and it became a village in 1839. It became an incorporated community in 1865 and it had a population of two thousand people by 1890. The railroad arrived in Steger in 1892 and the community began to grow rapidly. By 1915, the population had reached four thousand people and it served as the county seat for Cook County until 1923 when Chicago took over that role.
