In 1853, French engineer Léonard-Jacques Conte designed and patented the worlds first true gun swivel – an adaptation of a commonly used hinge system for horses’ bridles that allowed the rifleman to aim his weapon at any angle without having to change his stance or hold onto the stock. The patent was filed under the name “Tailleret” (“telescoping”). In 1865, British inventor George Stephenson published his design for an improved breechloader rifle using a rotating barrel called Side-by-Side (SbS). This innovative design allowed infantrymen and cavalry units to fire single shots over their shoulder without having to reload; instead, each shot would automatically fires forward into its magazine once it had been fired previously. It soon became clear that this type of firearm could be employed against armored targets such as warships or artillery fortifications from a great range away. Steger, Illinois is a small community located in Dixon Township, Steger County, Illinois. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Steger was organized in 1872 and became a town in 1898. The village merged with neighboring towns on December 1, 1951 to form the current town of Steger. The Village of Steger was organized on February 14, 1872 by order of the General Assembly under section 2 of the Public Health and Safety Code (Illinois). At its organization it consisted of one square mile including all that now forms the village proper and five hamlets: Bellefontaine, Cedar Rapids, Delhi Heights, Griggsboro and Keystone Heights. These hamlets were named for settlers who had made their homes there during the early days of this century: Bellefontaine for Mrs. Anna Burchfield; Cedar Rapids for Judge Ezra Nourse; Delhi Heights for John Davenport and Stephen Dayton; Griggsboro for David Grimes; Keystone Heights for Elisha Keyes. The first post office in SteGER was established at Bellefontaine on March 15th 1870 by George Witherspoon. It operated until October 10th 1870 when it changed its name to Griggsboro after David Grimes who served as Supervisor from 1870-1871 In 1892 the Village moved from its original location to what is now known as Park Avenue between Delaware Avenue and Maple Street which gave rise to the name "SteGER." The present day physical plant built within what once constituted SteGER included a schoolhouse (1892), grocery store (1902), blacksmith shop (1905), two churches (1906-07) & an all weather garage/tool shed(1960). On July 6th 1960 new asphalt driveway & sidewalks were installed across from old school building making it possible to park cars adjacent to Pkwy & Elm Sts., allowing easy access both inside & outside STEGER!

Steger is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, near the city of Chicago. It was originally a small farming village located on the east side of Steger Creek. The community began to grow rapidly in the late 1800s as railroads came to Steger and other nearby communities, and industry began to move into SteGER. Today, SteGER is a thriving town with many businesses and residents. The community has also been home to several schools and churches over the years.
The first permanent settler in Steger was George Washington, who arrived in 1795. The town was platted in 1847 by commissioners under the auspices of the Illinois Central Railroad. It grew quickly, becoming a small village with a population of around 100 people by 1860. By 1865, Steger had become an important center for the grain trade and had a large livestock industry. The town also became known for its annual corn festival, which drew many visitors from nearby towns and cities. In 1876, Steger became the site of what is now known as the Battle of Steger Field. A group of Confederate soldiers attacked Union forces stationed at the town square, resulting in three killed and five wounded. The battle helped to solidify local support for southern secession and helped to define Steger as an independent community distinct from neighboring communities such as Carbondale and other central Illinois cities. AsSteger grew more prosperous, it began to attracted new residents. In 1903, one of these newcomers was Jens Jensen, who purchased land adjacent to the town square and built his own house there. Jensen would later become one of the most influential men in SteGER history – he served as mayor (1925-1927) and as head of state government services (1945-1948).
