The museum has a collection of over 50 firearms from various periods and different countries. The museum also has a library with several hundred books about firearms. One of the most interesting pieces of weaponry at the Steger Firearms Museum is an American Model 1871 Navy revolver that was used by Captain George Armstrong Custer during his fight against the Sioux in 1876. The revolver was auctioned off for $2 million in 2009.

Steger is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,557 at the 2010 census. Steger is located in the far north-central section of the state, across from Chicago. It is bordered by Aurora to the east and north, Naperville to the west and south, and Bloomington to the southwest. The area that now Steger was first settled by Germans in 1846 as part of what would become Cook County. In 1853, a post office called "Snyder" was established in what is now Steger; it ceased operation on October 15, 1857. The townsite that became SteGER was laid out on May 3, 1865 by George Wernillebrandt for John Laughlin and others as part of a Township Plan for Cook County that took effect June 1 of that year. At first only men were allowed to reside there; later women also began living there. The largest employer in SteGER until its closure in 2009 was Ironton Mills Inc., which operated a mill complex (now demolished) along with several other businesses until its bankruptcy in 2003. According to the 2010 census, 1% of SteGER's residents were foreign born; this number decreased marginally upon census enumeration through 2011 when it increased to 0%. All but 2% ofSTEER's residents lived below poverty level according to 2000 US Census data; this figure increased slightly since then despite falling poverty rates nationally over that period. As of 2007 about one-third of STEER residents had never attended college or university; this figure has remained relatively stable over time despite having risen somewhat among recently graduated high school graduates statewide (see table). Steger is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,045 at the 2010 census. Steger is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a strong agricultural tradition. The community was founded in 1848 by German immigrants. It originally consisted of twelve families and grew rapidly because of its location on the Butterfield Railroad. By 1860, it had a population of 350 people and was incorporated as a village within Cook County. In 1870, the village voted to become an independent circuit court town; it did this because it wanted more control over its finances and infrastructure than that granted to neighboring towns in Cook County. In 1914, Steger became one of twenty-six villages in Illinois to be made an city when it ratified a resolution giving itself all the powers necessary for municipal government including taxation, fire protection, street cleaning and building permits. The city built several large public buildings such as City Hall and Park Square; these were replaced by newer structures during the 1970s and 1980s when Steger began to experience declines in population due to suburbanization. However, SteGER continues to have strengths both locally and nationally: its agriculture sector remains one of the most important economic engines in the community; its volunteerism makes it an excellent place to live; and its proximity to Chicagoland provides many opportunities for cultural experiences.
