Steger is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Steger Historical Society and Museum is located in the town. The first European to visit Steger was Jacques Marquette in 1673, who named it after himself and his brother Jean Baptiste de Steger. In 1803, John Stephenson built a mill on the north side of the village for grinding corn and flour into meal. A post office was established here in 1809, but it closed in 1812 because of lack of mail service from Streator. John Doldridge erected a large gristmill on the south side of Steger about 1825 which became one of the largest mills operating in Illinois at that time. The gristmills were destroyed by fire in 1865; however, another gristmill was erected on this site soon afterward and continued operation until 1975 when it also went out of business. In 1830 Abraham Lincoln visited Stege while he was campaigning for president; he stopped at Doldridge's mill to buy some flour for his campaign trail speeches. In 1861 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Steger en route to battle patrolled by Confederate General Robert Ewell across the state line near Springfield: "To see General Grant marching through our little village with his horsemen filling every street like so many black clouds - well I can't help feeling very much like an American." On October 9th 1870 Joseph Mengele came to SteGER from Auschwitz concentration camp as assistant medical officer #3 during World War II Japanese prisoner-of-war camp selection process inside Japan's Mount Fuji POW Camp No 7 where selections were made by ranking military officers for death or labor duty with other prisoners within Mount Fuji POW Camps throughout Japan including those held at various internment camps such as Nojiri (Aizu), Omiwa (Nagasaki), Tojo (Ichiki) and Kusaishi (Fushimi).

Steger is a small town in the western part of Illinois, United States. The population was 4,944 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Steger is one of two towns in Hancock County that were not merged into Ballwin in 2012, and still maintain their own separate governments. The community was named for German immigrant Johann Gottfried Steger, who arrived in 1827 and operated a tannery there until his death in 1884. A post office was established at Steger on December 1, 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on May 12, 1907. Steger has been home to several agricultural businesses over the years: STEGER FARM CO., INC., which grows corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops; STEGER FARMS & CO., which raises cattle; STEGER AUTO WASHING AND DEEPSAW CLEaning Co.; STEGER CATTLE MARKET; STEGER MACHINERY & CO., which manufactured water pumps and other farm machinery; and JOHANN GOTTFRIED STEGER SCHOOL & MERCHANDISE CO., which did repairs on cars and sold gasoline and other automotive supplies from its shop on Main Street. In addition to its namesake tannery (now closed), Steger also enjoyed a brief period as an early coal mine before being abandoned in the 1920s due to environmental concerns aboutcoal mining near rural communities like Steger. In recent years though, local miners have reopened the mine as a tourist attraction called "The Mines" open late July-September with tours of the surface features of the mines including galleries where coal is mined from beneath ground by blasting operations using explosives) . A post office called "Steger" was established at Steiger Township on March 7, 1889. It continued operation until it was discontinued on October 3rd 1870 due to lack of customers./ Its last customer may have been John Hargrave who served as postmaster for three months after it opened./ The first letter sent from Steiger had "EIH", probably indication that an early stage machine could not print correctly
