Steger, Illinois is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,523 at the 2010 census. Steger is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1857 by John and Susannah Steger as a community on the east side of the river near present-day Kane County. In 1870, John Steger donated land to build a townhall and school, which became the first public building in Steger. The village grew rapidly after railroad construction began nearby in 1871; by 1880, it had a population of 1,500. In 1892, steamboats brought settlers to SteGER from all over America for vacation; many of these early settlers were associated with the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC). MEC missionaries helped organize local schools and churches and developed an agricultural economy that supported some 2,000 people by 1905. During World War I (1914-18), SteGER furnished troops for service in Europe; its unemployment rate was only 5%. After war ended, many residents returned home but continued farming; in 1925 there were still 1,500 residents living in steGER.residential development began around 1930 when McHenry County voted to annex parts of neighboring Kane County so that more housing could be built closer to jobs available on main highway routes through those counties. This growth led to increased traffic congestion on Main Street which caused angst among many citizens until effective plans were put into place including widening the road arteries along with installation of new expressways throughout much of McHenry Counties during this time period making it easier for commuters travelling through those areas without having to detour through STEGER

Steger is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by George Steger in 1854 as a small farmstead on the south side of the Little Chicago River. Steger post office was established in 1857, and the first store opened in 1865. He also constructed a large log cabin for use as a schoolhouse and store. In 1870, George Steger married Sarah Jane Stephenson and moved to what is now Ironwood Hills. They had five children: Abraham (1872-1935), Emma Lillie (1875-1948), George Washington Steger (1877-1945), John Sibley Stephenson (1879-1965) and Florence Maynard Stephenson (born December 9, 1881). In 1893, they erected a new home on their current site; it became known as "George SteGER Hall". After World War II, many people left SteGER because of low prices for farmland around Springfield; however, some have returned since then. Today's economy depends largely upon tourism due to its beautiful scenery and interesting history. George SteGER High School offers education from PreKindergarten through 12th grade with an option for college preparatory courses leading to high school graduation or acceptance into one of four local universities: Northern Illinois University Carbondale - Carbondale Campus | DePaul University | Northern Illinois University Edwardsville - Edwardsville Campus | Drake University . In 1836, a group of Missouri settlers, led by John Steger, set out from Independence, Illinois to find a new home in what is now Steger County, Illinois. The original town site was on the banks of the Kaskaskia River and it was named after Steger's party. The first permanent settler in what is now Steger County was Elijah Herrington. In 1837, Isaac Cook came overland with his family from Decatur County, Indiana and established a farm four miles west of present-day Peoria. In 1840, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States, he traveled to Peoria to campaign. He stayed at the Herrington house until early in the morning of November 3rd when he left for Springfield. On that day he attended a meeting of the State Council where he became a member and afterward delivered an address on "The Present Condition and Prospects of Our Country." That evening he dined at Mr. Herrington's house and then took his horse and buggy back to Springfield where he spentthe night before going into office on November 4th. On January 6th1846 Colonel John Ladd made his final trip east from Nauvoo (now Ormond Beach), Illinois as part of General Joseph Ayer's military escort for Governor Daniel Webster's inauguration parade through Chicago. Passing through Steger County on their way southward they stopped at Mr. Herrington's place for lunch on January 7th; thence continuing their route they arrived at Quincy about three o'clock P M that day olivertwenty one years ago
