Steger is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Peoria–Bloomington–Champaign Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first steers to be brought to Steger were from Wabash Valley on May 3, 1873 by J.P. Steger and Fenton Hogg, two men who had contracted with the railroads to supply this area with feed for their animals. In 1875, J.P.'s son-in-law George Ewing began trading meat from his farmstead in nearby Davenport for hogs and beef from farmers in Steger and other parts of the county. By 1902, Ewing's store had become one of the largest in town and he was also serving as its postmaster. In 1907, Charles Aiken purchased one hundred acres (40 hectares) of land east of town for $1,000 cash and began construction on a new cotton gin which would be used to processavesa (cottonseed). The first bales of that type were processed there in 1909; Steger became known as "the Cotton Capital of Illinois". Banksboro Road was built between 1903 and 1906 as an arterial road connecting SteGER with Carbondale just south; it now forms part of State Route 508 Alternate (SR508). The original name given to SR508 when it was routed through central SteGER may have been "Cotton Belt Road" because muchof it paralleled banks running along River Des Plaines or the Chicago River. It was not until 1916 that SR508 became StEGER Boulevard when it changed its alignment following injuries sustained by local farmers while trying to control a dust storm within city limits; shortly thereafter OSU Extension Bureau employees transferred responsibility for SR508 from Carbondale to SteGER under then Director Gifford Pinchot's leadership - making this officially the "StEGER Boulevard System" . In 1952 US Highway 16A came downriver concurrent with StEGER Boulevard from Urbana towards Champaign; today that highway bears its original moniker once again - becoming known locally as simply "StEGER Boulevard". Steger is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The community is located on the east side of Steger Road southeast of Chicago. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Gottlieb Steger in 1837 as a sawmill and grist mill on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1854, Steger built a large farmhouse and added a blacksmith shop to his business. In 1865, he donated land to create what would become Steger Township. In 1892, Gottlieb Steger's grandson Julius also donated land to create what would become Steger Park. The park falls within current-day Crystal Lake Township but it has been annexed into Crystal Lake bySteGER since 1978 because it falls within one mile of both townships' borders. Gottlieb Steger died in 1915 and his estate left behind a series of donations totaling $225,000 that were used for various projects including road construction and education in steiger township and neighboring communities (including Crystal Lake). Today much of that money still remains invested in these endeavors with some having returned more than $50 million to its original donors since 1951; this includes many local businesses who have made contributions such as Chevrolet dealerships which have given back more than $10 million over time Additionally there are numerous museums located throughout steiger township as well as an agricultural museum open year-round called "The Great Lakes Agricultural Museum".
