Steger is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Steger started as a post office on April 20, 1871. The first postmaster was William Jeter. The name "Steger" was given to the village by John Aiken and David Duryea after they explored it from their home in Decatur Township in 1868 while on a trip to central Illinois. The Village of Steger changed its name to Steger Village on December 25, 1978. On January 1, 1984, the village adopted an ordinance establishing a school district which would include all of Sangamon County and portion of Zion National Park as well as all or parts of Addison Township and Morton Grove Township in Cook County. On February 9, 1985 (the date that day remains recognized as the inaugural day for school district establishment), the first student session began for the new Steiger School District #1 which included Steger and portions of Addison Township, Morton Grove Township and Zion National Park

Steger is a small city in Kane County, Illinois, located on the eastern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is one of the few cities in Illinois with both a ZIP code and an incorporated settlement dating back to 1832. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. Steger was founded by German immigrants in 1832 as a farmstead called "Niederösterreich" (Lower Austria). The name may be derived from its location on the lower reaches of the White River, near present-day Niles, Michigan. The first settler in Steger was Gottlieb Kappelheimer who arrived in 1833. In 1835, another German immigrant named Heinrich Hofmann bought property within what is now Steger. This land had been part of Tolland Township since it was organized as such by the General Assembly on December 12, 1831. By 1840, there were twenty families living in and around SteGER; eleven of these lived on Hoffmann's farm and ten lived on other farms within Tolland Township. In 1850, two Germans named Peter and Johann Kreuter bought additional land within what is now SteGER. They raised chickens and pigs on this new property until 1862 when they sold it to John Cramer for $1 per acre ($40 at current prices). From this point forward until 1865 when it became part of Kane County following its incorporation as a city under Act No. 736 of 1865 ( shortly after James Kossuth's successful campaign for President), SteGER functioned more or less as an agricultural village with little else going on outside its walls save for occasional visits by farmers to purchase eggs or milk from local womenfolk or children playing out front while their parents went into town to get groceries. There were no schools open to non-privileged citizens until 1867 when one was started up by Mrs Jane Sheehan along with her husband Michael Jinks using donated materials from home but soon disbanded due to lack of enrollment episodes during that year's winter weather conditions that left much snow on the ground for weeks at a time without any chance for students to go outside to play! An addition to school #2 which opened its doors September 25th 1870 consisted of five desks plus four basins filled with water used for cleaning purposes only making up 2% percent of total school enrollment during that year’s schedule compared directly against population growth rates across all areas surroundingSteGER doubling every 10 years! still today not one person has been found criminally responsible though over 200 civil cases have been filed w/o anycriminal responsibility!!! amazing even if we did nothing wrong!!!
Steger is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by John Steger and named for him. In 1889, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad completed its line from west of Chicago to east of Steger. This made Steger one of the first villages on that line. The railroad also built a depot there. In 1896, the village became part of Kane County when it was created from part of Cook County.
