The first gun barrels in Steger were made in 1814 by Nicholas Hahn. The first cannon barrels in Steger were 6-inch calibers. By 1837, the size of guns had increased to 8-inch calibers and 12-inch calibers. With the growth of artillery, Steger began manufacturing cannons as well. By 1860, the town had two factories that produced cannons and rifle rounds.
Steger is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Steger's elevation is 699 feet (200 m). It was first settled by Germans in 1847 and named for brothers Wilhelm and Ernst Steger. The village of Steger had a post office from 1852 to 1865 and again from 1868 to 1886. The village charter granted to it said "the trustees shall be men who are residents of the village". In 1903, the name was changed to Steger after Wilhelm Schrader, an early settler. In 1907, the Village Council repealed a resolution calling for annexation by neighboring Aurora Township due to lack of support from the community. After two years of debate and testimony on the issue by both villages' leaders, Aurora Township annexed SteGER on July 1, 1909. On November 3rd that year Alfred Jenssen became township president and appointed George Cockerill as administrator for SteGER until he could be elected mayor in 1910; however this never happened as Jenssen died suddenly before he could take office on January 2nd that year. Mayor Cockerill served one term only before his death on February 12th 1912 which made Manager Wessels successor; however within two months Mayor Wessels resigned because of personal financial problems with his son-in-law Fritz Burger who would eventually become township president himself in 1916 when Emanuel Hinsdale took office as mayor following Cook County's restructuring into five large departments: four were under Cook County government heading (police, fire prevention/protection, public works), while one (county jail) remained with national jurisdiction under US Marshals Service control pending trial Hearings on its legality etc., leaving only municipal services unprovided or contracted out including water systems service which had been municipally provided since pre-1907 On October 15th 1916 Mladen Petricic became township president effective November 3rd having succeeded Wessels who had resigned due to personal financial problems caused by his son-in-law Fritz Burger becoming manager instead (). petricic renamed all services formerly municipally provided such as water systems service now called municipal services . This change followed a decision made duringoslovation referendum held May 25th 1916 that all services other than county jail should be run by county sheriff’s department through purchasing power granted through state legislature enabling Cook County Government Purchasing Authority

Steger is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It lies east of Chicago on the border of Cook and Will counties. The Steger post office was established in 1881, and closed in 1971.
The first white settler in Steger, Illinois was H.W. Steger who arrived in 1848. He and his family were the first to build a cabin on the site which is now known as Steiger Place. The Steigers became successful furriers and settlers in the area, eventually becoming one of the most influential families in Steger. They also played an important role in statehood and politics. In 1902, they donated land to help create the city of Chicago and their home still stands today as part of that city's Park South neighborhood.
