The township was organized on January 14, 1840 under the name "Benton County". That year it borders present-day Harvey and Peoriatownships to the south and west; sections 2, 3 (now part of Eastview), 4 (now part of Westview), 5 (now part of Orchard Park), 6 (now part of Willowbrook) to the north; and section 7 (now in Ottawa) to the east. On February 27, 1850 the county seat was moved from Batavia to SteGER because Batavia had failed to meet financial obligations incurred during its incorporation as a village in October 1849 which included land acquisition for a new county courthouse and other projects not related to public welfare or defense purposes but still considered an annexation by Batavia Village Incorporation No.. Consequentlyatty June 30th 1853 territorial government was established effective with annexing all unorganized territory within Mclean County including portions now located in Peoria Township along with Berwyn Township also annexed from Bloomington Township becoming Cook County effective July 1st 1853 with headquarters at Terre Haute . On November 15th 1860 two men named George Witerman and Isaac Hinkle were shot dead while driving their horse buggy over what is now Old State Highway 506 just outside town limits after they stopped for dinner near where US Hwy 60 ends then proceeded down Old State Highway 506 following Indian Creek towards Antioch where they camped out before continuing down OldStateHighway506onto Antioch Bridge where they got lost trying back up when night fell (). The Manufacturing Base of America in Illinois during the 1920s relied heavily on cotton textiles for their production needs; however during World War II Steger lost its manufacturing base to Caterpillar Inc., but regained it starting in 1945 when they started making agricultural equipment for the war effort.
