Steger is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. Steger is the home of Carbondale High School and the Illiniwek ice cream company. The first Europeans to visit Steger were French traders in 1673. The town was platted in 1827 by John C. Steger and named for him; it had a population of 508 then. A post office called Steger was established in 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town became a village on April 14, 1903, after being merged with Carbondale from two separate townships. The Illiniwek ice cream company was founded here on October 5, 1925 by Eugene Wojtasiewicz and his brother-in-law George Kurowski. In 1932, they opened the first production plant outside of Chicago; it continued to produce Illiniwek products until 1984 when it moved its manufacturing operations to Peoria, Illinois. In 1957–58, local residents helped finance an exhibition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign entitled "A Century of Illiniwek." The exhibit included over 100 artifacts from the Kurowski family business including tools used during production as well as marketing materials dating back to 1926. On July 12, 2009 (100 years after their establishment), Illiniwek celebrated its centenary with a weeklong festival that involved traveling throughout central IL as well as appearances by museum personnel from around the world. In 2013–14 alone, Carbondale raised over $2 million for various community organizations through fundraising events held throughout the city; this money went towards funding projects such as new parks and street lighting across Carbondale streetside areas which have seen increased crime rates since those efforts began..
