St. Charles was founded in 1847 by the brothers Isaac and Michael St. Charles. The town is named after their father, Pierre-Jacques St. Charles, who donated land to the town on which it stands. The first store opened in 1851 and the first school in 1853. In 1870, St.Charles became a village and began to develop its own businesses and services. In 1916, it joined the Illinois municipality of Elgin and has since been an integral part of that community.
