The first European settlers in the area that is now St. Charles, Illinois were Frenchmen who came to what is today the city in 1779. The city was founded on a site that was once part of the village of Orleans which was destroyed by flooding in 1814. The French built a fortification around the present-day downtown area and named it Fort Orleans after their king, Louis XVIII of France. The fortifications served as a barrier against Native American raids and also acted as a trading post between France and its Indian allies. In 1816, when Illinois became an independent state, Fort Orleans became part of the new state capital, Springfield. In 1819, General James K. Polk Battle led an army from Missouri through central Illinois to march on Springfield in order to capture California goldfields for President James K. Polk’s campaign for president. On September 9th, 1819, Battle won his victory at Peoria over Mexican forces under Santa Anna and took control of parts of California that would become Mexico City twenty years later. After his victory at Peoria, Battle went on to lead another military expedition against Mexico which resulted in Perry’s Rebellion (1824). When St. Charles became an incorporated town in 1829 it was part of Springfield Township but it moved to its current location within the limits of Chicago Park District on May 1st 1870 when Chicago annexed all of Cook County including St.Charles Township into Chicago proper
