1812-1814: The first white settler in St. Charles, Illinois was Nicholas Johnson. He and his family arrived from Maryland in 1812. Johnson founded a log cabin on the banks of the Mississippi River near what is now St.Charles, Illinois on February 17, 1812. The town of St. Charles was established in 1814 when a group of settlers led by Jedediah Smith moved to the area from Nauvoo, Illinois. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 had a population of around 100 people. In 1847, the city of Chicago was founded and St. Charles quickly followed suit as one of its earliest residents. In 1861, the city decided to annex part ofSt.Charles into its jurisdiction and this resulted in the demise of the town center which fell apart over time due to lack of support from the new municipality
