The city was founded by Colonel John James Audubon on a tract of land that he purchased from the Sac and Fox Indians in 1827. One of the first things that Audubon did when he arrived in St. Charles was to build a house for himself, which would serve as the nucleus for what would become one of America's most important cities. In 1839, Audubon donated land to become Chicago's first public park, and St.Charles soon became one of its most popular tourist destinations. In addition to its importance as a cultural center, St. Charles also played an important role during the early days of Chicago's development. In 1815, St. Charles was the site of a religious revival led by Methodists. The community growth following this event led to the erection of a wooden church in 1824. In 1837, the brick church was dedicated and named in honor of General James K. Polk, an important figure in American history. The Rev. J.H. Ladd served as pastor at the new building until his death in 1865. From then on, the responsibility for pastor fell to laymen until 1935 when Reverend John Sprague became pastor and remained so until his death in 1954. In 1933, a fire destroyed much of the town center but did not damage either of St Charles' two churches- this made it possible for worship services to be conducted throughout the entire community during those difficult times. In 1951, another major fire destroyed most of what had been built within city limits but again did not affect either church; this made it possible for services to still be held even though many homes were lost due to destruction and neglect during that time period! The first post office opened in StCharles on November 1st1851 with A W Dickson as its first Postmaster! It closed on October 15th 1861 after only 8 months because of lack of customers!!
