In 1970, St.Charles was designated a UNESCO City of Culture due to its importance in cultural heritage preservation throughout Illinois and across North America
The first St. Charles Parish was organized on March 12, 1819. The parish was named for the French king, Charles X, who had died a few months earlier. The construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1825 increased demand for goods shipped through the canal and led to the growth of St. Charles Parish. In 1870, a chapel was built on the eastern border of the parish to serve as a main center for worship. St. Charles Parish experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to Chicago and its role in supplying munitions factories in Illinois and Wisconsin. Tens of thousands of people from all over southern Illinois joined forces with American troops in service during World War II, making SaintCharles one of the most heavily populated parishes in America. After the war ended, SaintCharles Parish continued to grow rapidly, becoming one of the largest parishioners in Illinois by 1960.
