However, tourism still remains one of the town's largest sources of income while some other major businesses include Quincy University (formerly known as Grinnell College), Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Headquarters Complex,[1] Marymount Chicago Pizza,[2] McCormick & Company[3] United Way Chapter 825,[4] and HPE.[5] The first white family to live in Springfield arrived from Kentucky about 1840: John Greenleaf Whipple and his wife Elizabeth Bogan Whipple landed at Kaskaskia Island on May 12th that year after being shipwrecked off shore from Missouri.[6][7][8][9][10] Many more families followed including those from Massachusetts who founded Lawrenceburg in 1846;[11] New Englanders who settled near present day Carbondale; Germans who moved into what is now Crystal Lake; Irishmen who settling around Naperville; Africans brought over by traders working on Illinois farmlands – these immigrants formed what are today known as "The First Families". The Townsite plat for Springfield was filed on October 17th, 1836 by George Washington Glidden[12], one of four partners included in founding father James Kapp’s business venture: The Grocery Merchants’ Association (later renamed The Grist Mill).[13],[14],[15],[16]) With only $5 offered for each Lot they sold out within hours! This early effort at urban planning marked an important step forward for future towns throughout Illinois! A new courthouse was built between 1840-1843 thanks to donations from locals such as prominent lawyer Richard Masons Jr.;[17][18][19][20]; General David Dixon helped finance it; local farmers donated land for public square; bricklayer Nicholas Metcalfe laid down the foundation stone on December 6th 1850,[21]; sheriff Gideon Welles officiated at dedication ceremonies January 2nd ‘51 when 1st Ward Alderman John Hickey pronounced name “Springfield” following application made by citizens James Phelan and Drury Leland [22]; cornerstone may have been quarried nearby at Dickenson Quarry owned by Elijah Dickinson Sr., father-in-law of Abraham Lincoln
