Springfield is the capital of Sangamon County and home to the University of Springfield. The first European visitors to what is now Springfield were French traders in 1775. The town was founded on November 7, 1812 by a group of men from Kankakeehire (present-day Chicago), as a way to get goods to the city for sale. When Illinois became a state in 1819, Springfield became its capital. The first county courthouse was built here in 1824 and remains used today as the county courthouse Annex. In 1827–28, Springfield enacted an ordinance providing for public education through private schools starting with Kindergarten through Twelveth Grade. It also passed an act establishing fire insurance and an appropriation for that purpose. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), many people from around Illinois gathered together to support General Ulysses S Grant's effort against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee; some residents of Springfield joined forces with Union troops while others chose not to fight or fled their homes during what is known as "The Great Migration". After Lincoln's assassination in 1865, much of central Illinois turned against Reconstruction and elected pro-Confederate candidates along with members of Congress who had supported Lincoln's murder. This opposition led to one year of civil war (1866) before Union troops finally destroyed all remaining Confederate battlefields within Sangamon County—the last event occurring just outside present-day Springfield Township where most African Americans lived until after World War II when they were integrated into local communities across Sangamon County although some still reside within original boundaries of their respective townships/villages/communities). The Village of Springfield was chartered in 1847 and made up of the present-day neighborhoods of Arlington Heights, Bloomington Hills, Elmhurst, Franklin Park, Greenfield Center, Hennepin Avenue South and Quincy Street. The village had a population of just over 1,000 people when it was first organized. It grew rapidly after initially being annexed into the city of Chicago in 1854. In 1863 Springfield became an independent municipality with its own election laws and government. The following year the city annexed Springfield again to make it its official City limits. In 1875 the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill creating a new county named Cook County from portions of Will County that were then part of the City of Chicago. At that time Springfield was still part of Cook County despite having its own government and elected officials. On March 4, 1876, Springfield became one hundredth anniversary commemoration for its incorporation into Cook County and formal declaration as an official city by Mayor John Atherton on December 15th same year.
