The first pistols were made in Springfield, Illinois in 1836. The first rifles were also made here in 1836. Ammunition for these early firearms was a mixture of shot and powder that was brought over from Europe. The first real handguns were built here in 1853-1854. In the late 1800s, Springfield became a center for gun manufacturing because of its geographical location and its ability to get raw materials from all over the world to make firearms. This allowed for some really innovative designs and makes Springfield one of the most important Gun Manufacturing Districts in America.

The Springfield Armory was founded in 1836 and became one of the largest firearms manufacturers in the world. The Armory produced rifles, pistols, shotguns, machine guns and other firearms for both military and civilian use. The Armory also manufactured ammunition and tools used by gunsmiths.

Frémont, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as commander of the Union army in Illinois during the American Civil War. Their line of clothing includes both guns and ammo products. One of their most popular items is the Colt Combat Jacket (shown at right). The jacket was originally designed for American soldiers stationed abroad in World War II. It was so successful that it continues to be produced today by Colt revolver company! The combat jacket was made from heavy cotton fabric and features two pockets on each side as well as straps across the chest/back panel for extra warmth during cold weather months or when carrying Ammo weighing over 50 lbs! The jacket also comes complete with an adjustable shoulder strap which makes it easy carry your weapon without having it flopping around all day long like other jackets do!
In 1892, the first firearms were used in a shooting contest at the Columbine High School. The rifle was called the Colt revolving chamber revolver and it had a four-round clip that could be reloaded with cartridges bought from an armory. In 1896, a new type of gun was developed, called the lever action rifle. It was more simple to use than previous guns and its barrel could be easily changed to fire different calibers of rounds. In 1911, the first firearm designed specifically for target practice was created by John Fenton and named after him, the John Fenton Rifle. It featured a high quality barrel and magazine that allowed for quick firing of multiple rounds at close range. In 1922, Colt introduced their own version of this rifle known as the Model 1903 Springfield carbine. This weapon featured an oil-fired gas system that allowed it to be fired continuously with no need for reloading unlike earlier rifles which required repeated firings to correct malfunction or poor accuracy. This gave rise to what is now known as hunting rifles because they can be used in many different ways such as target shooting or self-defense purposes
Springfield is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 129,965. The city is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and was once considered one of the most important commercial and political centers in Illinois. It is also home to Northwestern University, a world-renowned university which makes Springfield one of its main rivals for research funds. In addition to its economic importance, Springfield has become known for its culture and history. The City's rich history can be seen from its buildings such as The State Capitol (built 1847), The Auditorium ( constructed 1907), The Freedom Trail ( built 1908), and Lincoln Park ( constructed 1902).
The first settlers in what is now Springfield, Illinois were Quakers who arrived in 1774. The town was founded on the banks of the Sangamon River, and was named for General James Clark's victory over British forces at the Battle of Springfield in 1803. In 1814, Springfield became a part of the United States and was renamed Washington County. The county seat moved to Bloomington in 1928, but continued to be called Springfield until it was again renamed in 1986 as part of a general name change for all Illinois counties.
