Nevertheless, through sheer force of will many individuals persevered despite this discrimination3 . It is interesting to note that some white citizens also began coming around during this time4 . Slowly but surely however – starting about 1870 – whites began leaving their minority black population behind in search for more opportunities 5 . Overall however, it can be said that although integration did take place gradually throughout much of downtown Chicago during this same era6 , it was expedited somewhat in Springfield7 .. Today much remains unchanged from when Springfield first emerged as a thriving community - including its rich culture which reflects its diverse history rooted deeply inside Chicagoland’s racial/ethnic fault lines8 ..
