South Holland, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 64,026 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County after Chicago. The name South Holland is derived from the Ojibwe word "honjō", meaning "place of Birch trees." The first white settler in what would become South Holland was Elijah Smith who arrived in 1809. He and his family were among the earliest Europeans to be located within what would become Cook County. Smith's farmstead stood on land that now includes much of downtown South Holland. In 1814, John Fenton purchased a parcel of land east of present day State Street and south of Wabash Avenue from Elijah Smith for $1/acre (or 0.004% of present day Cook County). Fenton named his new settlement "Fentonville". In 1835, a group of Methodists organized by Rev. William Carey bought 640 acres (2 km²) northeast of present day West Side Highway and east of Prairie Road from Jno Purdy for $10/acre (or 10¢/km²), which became known as Highland Park. Reverend Carey built several small churches there before selling all or part interest in Highland Park to various farmers and entrepreneurs over time including Solomon Grundy (1839-1911), Ebenezer Scudder (1841-1920), George Pullman (1850–1925), Augustus Kelley (1860–1945), Forrest Gumpfeder (1900–1975) and others. In 1862, John Doane opened the first general store in what would become South Holland when he opened a store on State Street between Wabash Avenue and Elmwood Avenue. Doane was followed by Julius Nystrom in 1865 when they both opened stores on Elmwood Avenue between State Street and Wabash Avenue near today's Miller House restaurant complex; this area now forms North Side Drive adjacent to Northwestern University's McCormick School Of Engineering & Science campus across Elmwood Avenue from Nystrom's store building footprint remnant extant as Wellesley Place

South Holland, Illinois was a small town in the heart of the Midwestern United States at the turn of the twentieth century. The community was founded by Germans in 1855 and grew steadily until it reached its peak in the early 1960s when its population plummeted to just over 1,000 residents. Today, South Holland is a small agricultural community that still retains many of its pioneer spirit and hometown feel. The town was first settled by Germans who arrived during the early nineteenth century. By 1860, there were more than 100 German residents living in South Holland. Many of these settlers had fled Germany following the 1848 revolutions that overthrew Emperor Wilhelm I and established a republic. The families who remained in South Holland started to build their homes around 1840 and soon began to explore what lay beyond their townships. In 1855, Johann Gottlieb Heimesaar, an advocate for German language rights and member of the Chicago Board of Education, traveled through Illinois and saw opportunity for growth near South Holland’s small riverside townships. He recommended that these villages be merged into one municipality so that they could share resources better. On November 3, 1855, South Holland voted to merger with neighboring similar village of Hinsdale into one municipality under Heimesaar’s leadership. This decision represented a turning point for South Holland; it became an important link in Midwest German culture as well as an official representation of German culture on American soil. Over time, other villages joined South Holland – Kankakee (1857), Arlington (1858), Batavia (1860), Menard (1862) and others until all but two were annexed into south-central Illinois by 1915 when designation as “South Holland Township” ceased to exist within municipal boundaries due to population changes within rural areas across central Illinois such as Joliet and Chicago). Today much evidence remains from this original period including built housing stock complete withKitchen Cabinets & Porches typical features associated with frontier settlements; axeheads found inside farmhouses dating back pre-Industrial times; worship services held at local Lutheran churches which continue today despite increased Northwestern competition; religious goods looted from Missionaries arriving after Mexican War while Property values soared post-war Boom; school children playing tag outside their schools during lunchtime recess…In short: These remnants provide insight into how quickly rural communities along Indiana/Iowa borders morphed into modern day suburbs after World War II ended – something not easily done without physical evidence!
