South Holland is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in South Holland was Nicholas Goudreau on a farmstead known as "Goudreau's Farm" about west of present-day South Holland. In 1837, John Prentice bought the farm from Goudreau and named it Prentice's Landing after himself and his brother John Prentice Jr., who had settled in the area two years earlier. In 1838, Daniel Boone platted what is now South Holland on land he had acquired from Nicholas Goudreau. He named it after General James Kasky of the Union Army during the American Civil War, who fought at Peoria Heights and other engagements near that town during that conflict. The first post office was established in South Holland on November 10, 1840; it remained open until 1870. A school for black children was organized in South Holland by Mrs. Mollie Beasley in 1905; it continued to operate until 1954 when integrated schools were established within Kane County government. Black residents attended white schools until 1957 when they were integrated into Kane County public schools under state law. A park located between Towne Center Drive and Arlington Road served as a center for African American activities throughout its existence; this included dances, picnics and other events typical of community organizations then associated with racial integration (such as catered dinners). South Holland’s history begins with early settlers coming to this area seeking new opportunities and unimpeded access to farmland available only to those living east of Chicago along Lake Michigan or those owning transportation links to eastern markets such as Milwaukee or St Louis (the latter being especially important since much agricultural production took place around these areas). This migration created many cultural amalgamations among different groups – African Americans with Indian populations hereabouts; Irish Catholics with Germans thereabouts; others – creating an unique county culture which has been passed down through many generations still thriving today despite some recent setbacks (most notably high crime rates adjacent to major city boundaries). The area now known as South Holland was first settled by the Illinois Native Americans in the late 1700s. The first European to see the area was French explorer Jean-Baptiste La Salle in 1769, and he named it after his home town of Louisbourg on the Scottish island of Islay. The region was part of what is now Michigan Territory during the 1800s, and when that territory was merged into Illinois in 1809, South Holland became part of Illinois too. In 1835, a group of Swedish settlers arrived in South Holland and began farming there. By 1850, many Swedes had left for other parts of Illinois due to lack of opportunity there. However, a small number of Swedish immigrants still lived in South Holland until 1862 when it became part of Union County, East Chicago Township. In 1870, a post office called South Holland was established at the junction of Ulysses S. Grant Road and State Route 615. It remained open until 1907 when it was closed because mail service to that area no longer existed.
