Shields’ millstream flowed through present-day South Holland until it reached its confluence with that of I-35 just east of town limits in 1960. In 1847, when James Shields died, his wife Sarah married John Edwards (1789-1866). John Edwards had come to this area as an American Revolutionary War soldier and merchant officer and had purchased a large tract of land around what became South Holland from Joshua Putnam four years earlier - one which he donated to establish what would become Edwards Township (now part of Park Ridge). After their marriage, Sarah and John Edwards started several businesses including a grocery store and post office before moving to Lockport where they raised nine children together and founded another grocery store there before selling their holdings back to Joshua Putnam for $3,000 cash in 1865. Held prisoner during World War II at Joliet Prison while awaiting trial for treason charges that America's incarceration policy resulted in many African Americans dying without any due process or trial; captain emeritus Patrick Fenton oversaw daily operations at Joliet prison during those years; upon his release following negotiations led by then U S Attorney Robert Higgs Jr., he bought out James Shields' interest in Shields-Edwards flour mills so that Fenton could continue operation as long as needed thereafter - continuing until 1978 when it closed all operations because state funding no longer existed under newly adopted formulas governing public sector finances South Holland has experienced some growth over time: starting with only 2 people living there 40 years ago; now there are over 50 residents who call South Holland home! In 1838, another pioneer family -the Driggs - moved into South Holland from Knoxville, Tennessee and established a farmstead There they raised corn and other crops until 1840 when they sold their land to John Noyes for $1 per acre. Noyes became an early leader in Kane County politics and served as its first sheriff from 1841-1844. He also helped found the Republican Party in Illinois. In 1845 he purchased 5 acres of land east of South Holland from Nicholas Berents for $5 per acre and began developing this land into what would become known as "Berents Prairie." This area later became home to many notable residents including General James Kapp (1796-1868), Jesse Lincoln (1825-1900), Amos Kendall (1810-1885), George Pullman (1850-1935) and Edwin Ladd (1849-1928). In addition to its economic importance, South Holland also played an important role during the American Civil War. In 1861 Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered his forces to burn down all three villages situated along his march through central Kane County: South Holland, North Bend Township and West Moline Township. The burning operations were conducted under orders from General Robert Ewing which destroyed over 120 homes and businesses within two hours total. The damage done by the fires caused much unemployment among locals which led to increased support for pro-Union sentiment throughout Kane County during the war years
South Holland, Illinois was founded by the Peoria River Colony in 1836. The town grew quickly and by 1840 had a population of over 500 people. South Holland was named for the Dutch settlement of South Holland on the Peoria River in Illinois. The first settler in South Holland was Nicholas Doherty. In 1847, the town became part of Rock Island County, Illinois.
