South Holland, Illinois is a small town in the west central part of the state of Illinois. It is located on the Sangamon River, about south of Springfield. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. South Holland has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European contact. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now South Holland were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1795 and named it La Pointe du Lac after a point on the Sangamon River where they built a trading post. In 1814, South Holland was claimed as part of what would become St. Louis County by General James K. Polk because Congress did not recognize Missouri's admission into the Union as scheduled on April 12, 1820. After Missouri's admission into the Union, General John J. Pershing ordered all American forces within reach to cross over the river and attack St. Louis from three directions—southwest from Moberly through Rockford to north from Carthage—in order to retake that city for United States control and protect Great Lakes shipping interests during their war with Mexico (1846-48). The community grew rapidly due to its location on trade routes connecting Chicago with points east and west; farm production became important early in this century when demand for goods increased following American victory in World War I; and several major industry expansions have occurred since then including agricultural processing (factory farming began around 1920), information technology (the invention of television followed soon thereafter), healthcare (the establishment of hospitals throughout Illinois during the postwar years), transportation (a railroad reached town in 1903), and manufacturing (a large paper mill opened near town beginning operation around 1915). The current downtown core dates back to 1925 when a new school district was created out of portions of older schools; commercial development began soon afterward with storefronts typical among small towns until more recent times when homes generally predominated; numerous parks are available within walking or biking distance including one particularly well-known tourist attraction called "Walking Soldier Park" which features an interpretive trail leading visitors through Civil War Battlefield sites associated with Springfield Armory, Dutch Reformed Church, First Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment Headquarters, etc.; multiple restaurants/bars are clustered along busy streets such as Second Street which sees heavy nightlife activity; various festivals take place throughout year including arts & crafts shows & carnivals significant events such as Fourth Of July fireworks displays etc.; shopping malls have developed recently adjacent to larger villages nearby allowing residents easy access both inside & outside their neighborhoods while still being able to walk or bike anywhere they please

South Holland, Illinois was once a popular agricultural center that is now known for its manufacturing operations. The community was founded in 1851 byodus Indian tribe members who were displaced during the American Civil War. The original name of the community was "Holland". South Holland became a town in 1871, and it had its first post office in 1876. The population of South Holland increased from 1,500 to over 10,000 by 1924. By 1930, the population had decreased to 6,000 due to heavy industry and economic decline. However, the community has seen resurgence in recent years with new businesses and growth in arts and culture. In 2013, South Holland became the first municipality in Illinois to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural significance.
The first permanent settler in the area was a man named John Doane, who came to South Holland in 1814. He and his family built a cabin on the property that is now known as Doane Park. The town of South Holland was incorporated on November 15, 1818. The first school was built in 1819 and the first post office opened in 1822.
