The village was organized in 1837 and annexed by the City of Chicago in 1853. South Holland is one of five villages that make up Park Ridge Township. The first settlers to South Holland were German Lutherans who arrived from Bavaria in 1792. They built a log cabin on what is now the corner of West Washington and Ontario Streets. In 1837, South Holland was organized as a village and annexed by the City of Chicago. The original plat for South Holland included an area bounded by Washington Street on the north,State Road 14 on the east, Ontario Street on the south, and Wabash Avenue on the west; but this plat was replaced by a new one which included all present-day South Holland except for portions along Cook County lines (in those days it was known as “the Farm Belt”). The original church located on what is now North Michigan Avenue was dedicated in 1840 and became known as St. John’s Lutheran Church. In 1865, work began to build what would become Tilden Field House which would house both military training and baseball games between Northwestern University and various teams from around Illinois during World War II; it also served as an air-raid shelter during World War II when Illinois Stadium wasn’t available due to construction projects nearby. In 1968, Tilden Field House was purchased by then-Mayor Richard Muehlmann for use as a school administrative building until its demolition in 1998 due to code violations; it has since been used again as housing for employees at Park Ridge Township Hall complex since 2006. Since its incorporation into Village form in 1853, South Holland has experienced many changes including annexation by other municipalities such as Park Ridge Township in 1968 followed by fire protection services being provided through Park Ridge Fire District No 1 until 1992 when those services were transferred to current Stewartville Township governance; streetlights being installed throughoutvillage during 1960s thru early 1970s when township had no streetlights while Village had 30 or more lights per block; establishment of police/fire stations withinvillage beginning late 1940s thru early 1960s after Village adopted unified zoning ordinance effective 01/01/1945 which required each municipality withinVillage to establish Stationed Police Department(SPD),Fire Departments(FD)and Parks Department(Parks)with Elementary School located inside each SPD station while High Schools remained housed withinrespective FD stations & Parks departments
